Welcome to YouTube Friday for November 2nd. This week we go old school with a Converse Weapons commercial. Back in the 80’s everyone not named Michael Jordan wore Cons. This commercial for the “Weapon” features a who’s who of basketball’s golden era. Isiah Thomas, Mark Aguirre (as a Mav), Magic Johnson and and co. do what seems to be a “Rappers Delight” parody. It gets real uncomfortable when good ‘ol boy Larry Joe’s verse comes up.

Remember that Jordan Gatorade commercial a few years back where they had the Rookie MJ playing the Wizards Jordan and the winner gets the UNC MJ. Even for someone (me) who can’t stand Michael Jordan, that was a pretty cool commercial. Well prepare to be amazed all over again with the magic of cinema. This time it’s the Turkish MJ, MEMO! Instead of Gatorade it’s Dimes??

Finally, the age old question is answered. Who would win, the fat Mehmet Okur or the slightly less fat Mehmet Okur?

It was about a 50/50 chance yesterday that I’d be able to get out to Oakland U. to see the Pistons’ open practice and unfortunately my side of the coin fell face down. Here’s a clip from last year’s practice. If anyone who went would like to share their experience feel free to do so in comments.

TGI(YT)F pays homage to Corliss Williamson this week. In case you didn’t hear, the “Big Nasty” announced his retirement from the NBA this past Wednesday.

Here’s the first memory that comes to mind when I think about the 2001/02 6th man of the year. It’s Corliss throw’n one down and then ready to throw down with the then rival Pacers’ Jermaine O’Neal. I always thought that the ‘04 Palace Brawl would have been a little more intense had a certain #34 still been with the red, white, and Pistons blue.

There’s a bonus TGI(YT)F today kiddies. Marbury is at it again. This dude is talking so bizarre, not quite this, but he’s still out there. I know this isn’t Pistons related, but c’mon, it’s entertainment.

How about some Amir Johnson high school dunk contest footage? He’s pretty freaky athleticly, but unfortunately he said he’s not looking to enter the NBA’s version. I guess he doesn’t want to be labeled as only a “dunker”.

What can get you more excited than for the new season that’s now a little more than three weeks away than a complation of the top 10 Pistons buzzers beater from ‘96-’06? If this was a more updated list it would include Rasheed’s heave, but that’s about all it’s missing. IT’S OVA….IT’S OVA….IT’S OVA!

That awful Amir Johnson singing clip really should be able to carry the week (if not two), but I’ll still offer up for TGI(YT)F goodness.

Here’s what I’m excited about…Jason “Mad Max” Maxiell. I can’t wait to see the slimmed down v2.0 get after the rim like it owes him money. This is a pretty good mix. It’s actually kind of tough to find these mixes that aren’t set to really vulgar rap. This one is on a Luda joint that has a pretty nice flow with out making you duck from too many incoming f-bombs. I noticed Max actually laying the ball up (gasps) in a few clips on here, hope he added 0% of that to the repertoire in the offseason. Roll film…

With the way the U.S. team is rolling through FIBA Americas Games they’re drawing a lot of comparisons to the original Dream Team that won gold in the 1992 Olympics. I wanted to remind fans of a Dream Team that was also very loaded and dominant.

Dream Team II won gold in the 1994 World Championships held in Toronto. The roster features two guys that should have played on the original Dream Team roster in my opinion, those guys being Isiah Thomas (didn’t actually compete in games because of achillies injury) and Dominique Wilkins. The rest of the roster is as follows: Shaquille O’Neal, Reggie Miller, Joe Dumars, Alonzo Mourning, Mark Price, Shawn Kemp, Dan Majerle, Derrick Coleman, Larry Johnson and Kevin Johnson. Not too shabby.

If there’s one thing I do dread about the dawning of a new season of NBA basketball it’s BILL WALTON. I’ve stayed up late to watch Chauncey, Tay, and the rest of Team USA compete in FIBA’s Americas Championship. Unfortunately for everyone Bill Walton is 1/2 of the broadcasting team calling these games for ESPN. What the hell is this guy ever talking about? It also disturbs me that he can wax so poetically about the historical origins of the naming of both Venezuela & the Virgin Islands but he neglects to remember that Kobe Bryant ISN’T the only member of Team USA who owns an NBA Championship ring! Listen to the old babbling hippie on this clip and you tell me he’s not still “expanding his mind”.

This week is easy, get some Jarvis Hayes YT mix or higlights. I wish it was that simple. There’s not much out there on our newest addition. Who would have thought you could look for something on YouTube and it not be there? Well here’s what we did come up with. It’s a segament Jarvis did talking about his 2007 Rolls Royce Phantom. Well…this is the Motor City right?? Maybe JH will take his whip to the Dream Cruise tomorrow to kinda say “hey” to the people. Never hurts to be a fan favorite.

Another Friday, another helping hand from YouTube. Here’s one of my favorite NBA commercials of all time. It’s a Minute Maid commercial starring Pistons’ legend Isiah Thomas along with 80’s basketball icons Patrick Ewing and Dominuque Wilkins. It’s not particularly funny or amazing, in actuality it’s a hunk of 80’s athlete product sponsorship cheese. But, it brings back memories. Remember when our heroes were larger than life types? Not gamblers, women beaters, illegitimate baby daddies, or gun wielding drunk drivers (well not that we knew of at the time).

Since the Celtics have become relevent once again by trading for Kevin Garnett and we’ve recently locked up our 6th man, Antonio McDyess for two more seasons here’s a vid of the two of ‘em. The setup: Garnett takes exception to Dice forcing Mark Madsen to flop so he pushes Dice. Dice goes at KG and Garnett wants none of that, witness the hasty back peddling.

2 cents Personally I’ve never been much of a fan of Garnett’s, so him going to Boston is a treat for me because you combine two things I don’t like! (Puts me in mindset of ‘04, when not only did the Pistons win it all but in the process they cock trophy blocked Karl “The Failman” Malone.) I recognize KG’s skill, but he’s just not for me. A lot of people will tell you he plays with so much “emotion”. Are they talking about his yelling or theatrics? To me that’s just mugging for the camera. It also seems like I’ve seen him getting into more extra curricular on court stuff than most any other player…sorta like in this weeks TGI(YT)F feature. Also I was always of the opinion that he was a big part of the problem in Minnesota, making too much money or the Wolves to put anyone else around him. /
