Since I don’t have a season preview to speak of the first two bullets contain four of the best the net has to offer.

  • MICHAEL CURRY on the importance of the young players conditioning themselves for the grind of an 82 game season.
  • DAVE BING make his bid for mayor official with the aid of business associate Derrick Coleman
  • ESPN’s Chad Ford sees RASHEED as the MLTBT (most likely to be traded) Piston
  • Not playing in the D-Leugue will be good for WALTER SHARPE’S narcolepsy
  • FLIP MURRAY as an Atlanta Hawk; so far so good

Pistons sign Alex Acker Posted by pistonsnation at 11:59 am

Alex Acker, who the Pistons drafted with the 60th pick in the 2005 NBA draft, has signed a one-year partially guaranteed contract.  Terms of the deals were not disclosed, but Chris McCosky of the Detroit News says the contract can be worth up to $687,000.  The addition of Acker gives the Pistons a 15 man roster.

Acker, a 6-foot 185-pounds combo-guard, has spent the last two seasons in the Euroleague with FC Barcelona (2007-08) and Olympiacos (2006-07).

Acker has been bothered with knee injuries over the past couple seasons.

Season’s getting close, can you smell it?

  • JOE DUMARS and Co. are going into the season with the same nucleus.
  • “We’re going forward with the same nucleus, but I’m still not happy with how the season ended,” Dumars said. “But we’ll put that behind us, and we’ll try to make it right this year.”

Personally, I think a deal could have been done had Joe not made his intentions to shake up the roster so public. Team’s probably figured Joe backed himself into a corner and they’d be able to take trade liberties on the Pistons. Not the case. I would have liked to have seen a move to better the team, but I’m glad Dumars didn’t cave into a regressive trade.

  • JASON MAXIELL has until Oct 31st to decide whether or not he’ll accept the Pistons’ 3 year, $15mil contract extention or become a restricted free agent
  • Khandor’s Sports blog sees improvement in the Pistons for 08/09
  • Assistant coach DARREL WALKER SAYS CURRY is going to put the focus back where it belongs:

“He’s going to emphasize defense, defense again and defense again after that,” Walker said. “I don’t think this team has a problem scoring, it’s just about getting that defensive mentality back that the Detroit Pistons used to have.”

  • Coach COWENS IS BIG ON KWAME:

Cowens said he’s been around the NBA since 1970 and he has seen very few guys as big as Brown who move as fast and under as much control. He said Brown, at roughly 275 and with very little body fat, moves his feet extremely well and will be a major factor defensively and as a rebounder.

  • COWENS ON AMIR:

“This guy does a lot of things you can’t coach. But he doesn’t do a lot of things, you can coach.”

PF starting spot up for grabs Posted by pistonsnation at 12:34 pm

AUBURN HILLS — The Pistons open training camp in 13 days, and for the first time in several years, the camp will feature an honest-to-goodness battle for one of the five starting positions.

First-year coach Michael Curry will give Amir Johnson, Jason Maxiell and Kwame Brown a legitimate and fair shot at unseating veteran Antonio McDyess as the starting power forward-center opposite Rasheed Wallace.

“We are looking at how we can inject our young guys into the rotation more, giving them a solid role and still get the most out of our veteran guys and be as efficient as possible,” Curry said. “One of the things we are looking at is having ‘Dyess go back to his role of coming off the bench.”

To be clear, Curry is in no way suggesting McDyess doesn’t deserve to maintain his starting spot. Quite the opposite.

“Whoever wins that starting spot won’t necessarily be the best player,” Curry said. “I think it’s hands-down that McDyess is our second-best post player behind Rasheed. But who we end up starting will be the player who gives us the best balance.”
(via: Detroit News)

I’m kind of torn with this one.  Although I’ve campaigned for Maxiell to start I’m beginning to wonder if that’s the right move.  It would depend on what kind of mood Rasheed was in in any particular game.  If Sheed wants to roam then we’ll lack post presence.  Maxy has developed a nice touch around the rim, but I just don’t see him being a post up threat.  I think he’s perfect coming off the bench with his hustle and energy.  He brings that “no letting up” mentality which we need.

I’d love to see Amir starting but where we left off last year would lead one to believe he’s still not ready.  Although, it does sound like he’ll have an equal chance to show what he’s got when camp opens.

Until further notice Kwame Brown is still Kwame Brown and I don’t think (aside from size) there’s too many of us in Pistons Nation pining for Kwam to be bumped up to the front line.

That leaves Dice as the #1 option still.  He’s older and he’s made no bones about his comfort zone being more in a 6th man capacity, but he still seems like the best option.  He will just have to work on getting into his rythm from the outset and not waiting to see how the game is shaping up.

There’s also the option of PF by commitee?

If nothing else it’s exciting to have abit of uncertainty in the starting five for the first time since about the late 1700’s.

Press clippings (are back!) Posted by pistonsnation at 12:27 pm

PN Press clippings are back with a vengeance! Joe may not be making any big moves but there’s stuff and junk going on.

  • Gilbert Arenas like our Kwame Brown pick up, Agent Zero even goes as far to say that this will be “Kwame’s year”. He also seems to be campaigning to get Juan Dixon back in a Wizards uni: “I’ll take him back in D.C. right now.” and Bullets’ Wizards’ fans are in accord.
  • Kwame understands that his key to being a productive member of the Pistons is going to lie in his ability to defend:

“A lot of people don’t take pride in their defense and don’t tip their hat to guys that go out and stick their nose in there and play hard on defense,” Brown said. “I think I’ve been one of the underrated defensive players in the league. I think on this team I’ll have a chance to shine and that’s exactly what this team needs.”

  • SI writer Marty Burns ranks the Pistons 6th in the East:

Logic says they should be ranked higher, since they suffered no significant losses (other than coach Flip Saunders) from a team that won 59 games last season. But even president Joe Dumars seemed to think this present group had run its course at the end of last season and needed some new blood. Kwame Brown isn’t likely to light a fire under anybody. And how will all those Pistons vets react to hearing their names in trade talks all summer? Unless Dumars has something else up his sleeve, the Pistons just seem like a team headed for a decline.

  • Pat Sullivan is Über happy to be back in Detroit.
  • Rasheed’s pre-game huddle dance is maketable
  • Rip’s former agent is accused of stealing $500k for Hamilton. Even for a millionaire that’s a pretty penny.
  • Could the Pistons use a 18 ppg scorer off the bench? Ah, nah never mind. Rodney Stuckey.
  • Remember Rodney White? No? Joe D took White #9 overall in 2001. Still no recollection? Perhaps that’s why Matt Watson has him at #3 on the biggest busts of the 00’s list over at Fanhouse. Last December, if you recall, we found out Rodney was averaging 36 ppg…over in Asia. He’s since landed on a very good Maccabi Tel Aviv roster (now w/ Carlos Arroyo).
  • “Super Dupe” is still hoping to find the right situation in the league and would like to return to Detroit and play for coach Michael Curry
  • A Jazz fan dreaming up a trade to bring Darko Milicic to Utah to back up Memo
  • Tayshaun and the U.S. Redeem Team continue their quest for Olympic bling by crushing the current World Champion Spanish team 119-82. Check out this Beijing Q&A with “Big Daddy Rich” Chuck Daly at NBA.com

Player movement Posted by pistonsnation at 3:44 pm

Long time no post…since it’s been a relatively quiet summer for Joe D. and the boys (Kwame freak’n Brown?) here’s a look at where some of our former Piston’s players have gone this past summer.

  • Flip Murray, who last season with the Pacers after being released by the Pistons back in February, has signed on with Atlanta. He’ll be joined in the Atlanta backcourt by fellow former Piston swingman Maurice Evans. Atlanta picked up Evans to fill the void left when Josh Childress took a very lucrative deal to play overseas in Greece.
  • While on the subject of players that have sought greener pastures across the Atlantic former Pistons Carlos Delfino and the Serbian Gangsta, Primoz Brezec, both inked deals overseas. While the Childress signing may have caught many off guard these should not. Both Brezec and ‘Los were constantly whining about not getting run here in the States and threatening to go Euro.
  • Carlos Arroyo also spurned the Association for Europe. Arroyo is expected to lead Maccabi Tel-Aviv in dribbles per possession.
  • Jarvis Hayes signed on with the Nets. There’s a guy you might have expected to go overseas. Loves to hoist, can’t defend.
  • Damon Jones (Bucks) and Joe Smith (OKC) were part of a three team trade that brought Buck’s guard Mo Williams to the Cavaliers. You know what that means? It means since DJ is now on the Bucks roster we’re guaranteed to meet them in the Playoffs.

Even though there’s been no major waves like expected, here’s a couple ripples from the Pistons pool. Everyone’s favorite 12th man Walter “Herrmannator” Herrmann is being brought back, after a strong summer league showing Will Bynum earned himself a two-year deal with the club, Detroit also added a second Walter, second round pick Walter Sharpe

…What’d I miss??

Tayshaun Prince will join the United States men’s basketball team in Beijing. U.S. Coach Mike Krzyzewski calls Prince “the ultimate team player and a star“. The team starts training on June 28th in Las Vegas, the Olympic games will begin on August 8th.

Drew Sharp says not dismiss the chances of the Pistons trading for Carmelo Anthony, believing both sides can come out a winner in the deal.

Joe Dumars’ son Jordan, has committed to the University of South Florida. Jordan Dumars is a 6′6″ 230 lb. swingman and played his high school ball at Detroit Country Day.

George Blaha tells WDFN that Rasheed Wallace and Richard Hamilton are probably the two Pistons starters who are least likely to be moved.

Pistons’ legend Vinnie “The Microwave” Johnson will join a slew of big names at taking part in tomorrow’s Buick Open pro-am golf outting in Grand Blanc.

The Pistons have the 29th & 59th picks in Thursday’s draft. ESPN’s mock draft has the Pistons selecting Kansas State’s Bill Walker.

At 6-foot-6, 235 pounds, Walker could bring upside to the Pistons big men, who are looking to add someone in the middle. As a freshman, he averaged 16.1 points, 6.3 rebounds, and 1.9 assists in 31 games next to teammate and potential top draft pick Michael Beasley. - Detroit Free Press

Coach Curry Posted by pistonsnation at 10:32 am

Sorry for the hiatus PN. We’ve got a new head man.

After one year of being an assistant Michael Curry has been fast tracked to the Pistons head coach. A lot of us expected Curry to eventually be the man, but this was quick especially considering Curry’s very little experience and the Pistons recent string of high profile head coaches. Curry is expected to sign a three year deal worth 7.5 million.

Curry is Dumars’ guy. We know he’s on board with Joe’s vision, let’s just hope he’s not just a “yes man”. This team needs some one to get on their asses and not be afraid of being unpopular. I’m personally tired of the excuses for lack luster play. No more life time achievement free passes for guys playing below what’s expected from them.

I personally didn’t think Curry was the optimal choice for the Pistons, but I’m willing to give him a chance to prove himself.

Looks like he and Joe Dumars now need to get to work assembling a staff:

Nothing has been settled yet with Curry’s staff. Reports that Lindsey Hunter will be one of the assistant coaches are either inaccurate or premature. Hunter hasn’t yet decided what he wants to do next season.

Former assistant Terry Porter was officially named the head coach of the Phoenix Suns on Monday. Dave Cowens is not expected to return. Igor Kokoskov, who has been on the Pistons’ bench since 2003, is exploring head coaching options in Europe as well as with the Serbian national team. - Via Detroit News

Pistons Flip Saunders off Posted by pistonsnation at 12:29 pm

So the first shot has been fired, or should I say the coach has been fired. If you read the first line of the linked Detroit News article it’s a mandate straight from Bill Davidson, who apparently is lucid enough to name a scapegoat. This is sure to be the first of many changes for this team. Expect some player accountability to come.

As for a replacement, are we to assume Michael Curry is the front runner?

Pistons deny Bulls run at Curry Posted by pistonsnation at 10:48 am

One of the adverse effects of being a successful organization is that other teams cherry pick from your coaching staff and front office personnel. Add assistant coach Michael Curry to the list. Curry is a top candidate to fill the Chicago Bulls head coaching vacancy, although the Pistons are indicating that they’re keeping Curry in the stable for the time being. Hope all perspective future employers can be kept at bay until the end of our playoff run.

Terry Porter interviewed by Phoenix Posted by pistonsnation at 2:06 pm

You had to wonder how long before teams came around to give Porter another shot at head coaching. Phoenix would be a pretty high profile gig for T-Porter to land with the names they have on that roster.

The Phoenix Suns have begun their coaching search in earnest by interviewing Detroit Pistons assistant coach Terry Porter.

Suns president Steve Kerr told ESPN.com that he flew in and out of Detroit on Thursday to meet with Porter, his former teammate for two seasons in San Antonio.
