Deron Washington waived
Posted by pistonsnationThis news is sure to disappoint a fan or two, the notoriously athletic Deron Washington has been waived.
AUBURN HILLS — Deron Washington, arguably the most athletic player on the Detroit Pistons’ roster, has been waived.
The move is a bit surprising considering the biggest knock on Washington’s game — shooting the ball — was not a major issue in the preseason.
In fact, he shot 64.3 percent from the field (9-for-14) and was a perfect 3-for-3 on 3-pointers.
Now that he has been waived, Chucky Atkins remains the lone player on the roster without a guaranteed contract. [Mlive]
Chucky’s still around, but aren’t we set for guards?

I definitely didn’t expect that one. I thought Chucky was a goner for sure, and Washington was a lock.
October 26th, 2009 at 11:28 amThis has to be an error.
I say that we as Pistons fans, bloggers etc Protest!
This is the worst move since Darko!
We traded Affalo because we had him,
Now we release him for Chucky Atkins!
I have never questioned Dumars, until now!
He was one of our best defenders, the most athletic,
He was part of our future core!!
I say PROTEST!!!
October 26th, 2009 at 11:31 amI’m not sure why we wouldn’t keep Washington around? He looked ready to go during preseason.
Are we really going to keep Chucky or trim it down to 13?
Man, what the f*ck is Dumars doing?
October 26th, 2009 at 11:48 amWhat if:
Joe is working a trade? Maybe he needed those two open roster spots? (assuming he eventually cuts Chucky).
Or maybe Chucky is part of that trade?
October 26th, 2009 at 11:51 amSeems to me like Joe is working a crack pipe! Even if you are working a trade, why not keep Washington? Why risk loosing him for nothing?
October 26th, 2009 at 11:52 amIf Richard Hamilton and Tayshaun Prince do not get traded the first few games in to the season like Chancey did, I’m done watching the Pistons. What the hell is wrong with Dumars, so now Washington is free to sign with whomever he wants to. What if he goes to Cleveland, Chicago, Washington, Boston, Lakers, Miami or Dallas?
October 26th, 2009 at 11:56 am@brgulker
I was also pondering the possibility of a trade in the works. That explains cutting a guy that was assumed to be part of the roster. Plus Deron’s contract was non-guaranteed so they were not yet committed to him financially.
Chucky Atkins has no trade value. Washington has more value than Atkins. Why the hell didn’t Kuester speak up, he knows that Washington is a beast! But ole platapus face, is just going to zip his lips huh?Goodbye playoffs and goodbye ticket sales, we just let go of the future fellas for pennies on the dollar.
October 26th, 2009 at 11:58 amMaybe we can trade Chucky Atkins for Otis Thorpe? What do you say. Or maybe we can just trade Ben Gordon and Kwame for Big Baby! Since Joe D, is making poposturious moves.
October 26th, 2009 at 12:00 pm@Piston Nation
Regardless if we were committed or not, he is no longer wearing a Piston jersey and thats scary!
October 26th, 2009 at 12:01 pm@Brgulker
I bet Chicago will take a swipe at Washington!
October 26th, 2009 at 12:06 pm@313spectator
Big Washington fan eh? I think he can contribute to another roster, but I don’t feel like we gave up an impact player necessarily.
@ PistonsNationBlog
Dude Washington will torch Detroit in the near future, ask Austin Daye, Jeribricko, and Summers about Washington, they will tell you. If you even get a comment at all, seeing that they are probably dissapointed as well.
p.s. I love the site.
But there is no trade in the works. It’s just Dumars f*cking up the team, for what its worth!
October 26th, 2009 at 12:10 pmjoe dumars is crazy he should have weived atkins….deron was ready to play i actually expected a lot from him this season…hes a good defender to and he can dunk like a man thats what pistons dont have on their roster…joe dumars is fu*king up the roster again
October 26th, 2009 at 1:00 pm313Spectator,
Respectfully, I didn’t see Washington as an impact player this season, nor as a “part of our core” moving forward.
I saw him as a very athletic young player who had the chance to become a role player on our team if everything worked out perfectly.
I highly doubt that he will make anyone’s roster and become an impact player in the next 2-3 years … maybe a role player, somewhere, someday. Maybe.
I’m surprised Joe let him go — I thought he would at least be a guy to have around for spot minutes and practice. I have to assume there’s a reason why he did so — if a trade comes down the pipes over the next few weeks, we’ll know that reason for sure. If not, we didn’t just sell the future for nothing.
October 26th, 2009 at 1:27 pm@ Brgulker
Respectfully sir, are you blind?
If so, maybe your keys on your computer are in braile, because Deron Washington is an athelete that can ignite a team, he plays ferocious defense, and plays with intensity! That is something that even Charlie V lacks.
Charlie V, but nobody on the Pistons aside from Will Bynum can match Deron’s intensity and atheliticism. Dude you rather keep a has been role player in Chucky Atkins, oppose to one who can put fans in seats, an defend the 1,2, or the smaller quicker 3’s.
Are you insane my friend? Matter of fact, it’s people like you that should be hired by Dumars, you my friend are along the same lines as Micheal Curry. Enuff Said.
@ PistonsNation Where is the support for Deron? I guess we will just sit around and do nothing? Just wait, he will be picked up this year, and for those who think different, please go have your eye balls checked.

When did I say I wanted to keep Atkins? And when did I say I was in favor of ditching Washington, for that matter?
I only had two points:
1) Washington has yet to do anything in the NBA. Maybe he will in the future. He is a good athlete, etc., as you rightly pointed out — so the skillset appears to be there. And obviously, if Joe let him go, he wasn’t going to be a contributor this season.
2) If Joe let him go, he must have had a reason that we don’t know about. Maybe there’s a trade in the works. Maybe Joe is under pressure to save money. Maybe Joe really values having that extra roster spot. Maybe Joe think Chucky can help coach Stuckey.
But whatever the reason, there is one. We just don’t know what it is.
Just wait, he will be picked up this year, and for those who think different, please go have your eye balls checked.
So, what has Washington done in the NBA that substantiates your claim?

I appreciate you taking part in this entertaining debate. But clearly Dumars has lost his mind. There is no excuse for this move.If a trade is in the works, pull the trigger, or release Atkins, don’t leave a future impact player in the balance like that. Dude I watched those summer league games, and the televised games from preseason, he changes the tempo of the game, with his above the rim play, almost similar to how Bynum does, he just doesnt handle the ball, so it’s off the ball movement that you have to notice.
If Dumars is under pressure to save money, trade Rip, or Tayshaun, Tayshaun is washed the f*ck up man. Lets face it. He hasnt been crap since 2006. Rip is washed up, he threw his hissy fits this preseasons like a whinning wife.
Chucky Atkins, is garbage. I’d rather have Bynum Mentor Stucky. Because Bynum is more of a Natural Point. Pistons are soft defensively and Deron could get out and pressure the wings. Athletes like that don’t come a dime a dozen, especially ones whom use there atheletisim for defensive purposes. He was an unselfish player, his only weaknesses was ball handling, mid range game, and his free throw shooting. But Rip can’t dribble to save his life after being in the league 10 years. So why not give Deron a chance!
This guy has been chewed up and spit out! Next, victim!!
October 26th, 2009 at 2:17 pm313Spectator:
I think the point of disagreement between us is this:
You are convinced that Washington already is an impact player. Not just a role player who gets spot minutes, but a game-changer.
I am much more skeptical. It would appear that he has raw talent and is skilled. In other words, he could potentially become a player (in the future, not the present) who could play a role.
But, like you, I’ve only seen a handful of minutes from the kid outside of college. Coach Kuester and Joe evaluate the kid on a daily basis. I am assuming that they have seen things that we have not seen. But like you, I was surprised by this. I expected Washington to make the team and perhaps challenge for some minutes at backup SF. I was wrong about that.
Maybe you are right in that Washington will eventually blossom into an impact player. I’ll remain skeptical, but I’ll freely admit I’m wrong if/when that happens. But for now, I’m not going to be anything more than mildly surprised … Not only does Joe get to evaluate Washington on a daily basis, he’s the only one privy to his future moves. I’ll wait to stone him until it all shakes out.
October 26th, 2009 at 2:28 pmYour right. But dude, I don’t smell a trade. Unless they trade for Bosh (via parting ways with Rip & Tay) or Trade for Amare, I don’t see anything else worth wild.
But, Letting Washington go & keeping Atkins was a crackhead move, I don’t care how skeptical you are as a person, you can’t be blind. Skeptical OKAY, Blind NO!
October 26th, 2009 at 2:33 pmOne last time: I’m not for keeping Atkins. I’m as surprised as you are that he’s still on the roster. It doesn’t make any sense.
October 26th, 2009 at 2:36 pmCoach Q on Deron Washington, “We would have loved to have kept him, he’s a young, athletic player & I think he has a future in this league.”
Come on man, I smell a rat. Hopefully if there is a trade in the works. They have Deron on Ice like they did Mc Dyess.
I hope they gave him some monetary relief for his troubles and tell him to stay active and sit tight, because he needs to be a PISTON damnit!
Get this sh*t together Dumars or we will have you impeached!!
October 26th, 2009 at 2:42 pmSo if the coach wanted to retain his services, and the GM (who’s in communication with the coach) waived him, the logical conclusion is that there’s something in the works that we don’t know about. Isn’t it?
October 26th, 2009 at 3:54 pm@Brgulker
Hold your horses buddy I didn’t see all of that being implied but okay. We will see, you are skeptical on Deron, I am skeptical that there is a trade in the works!
I hope there is tho, for the sake of the squad! I mean damn Rip & Tayshaun suck! So does Sucky Atkins!
October 26th, 2009 at 4:05 pmI just hope that after this allegedly trade is over and done with that they sign him back, because we need a him, more than he needs us!
October 26th, 2009 at 4:06 pmi thought we was getting younger we drafted deron groomed him then just release him 4 chucky? wtf maybe billups coming back lol everytime chucky go somewhere billups takes his spot he came to detroit we get billups by by chucky then chuck goes to denver then billups goes there and takes his spot lol we have all these gaurds where is the big man kwame brown cant gaurd nobody and he hurt he already cant catch a pass now he is our starting center ive been a piston fan all my life im ready to pick up another team this is getting ridiculous
October 26th, 2009 at 9:28 pmi think joe dumars jump the gun to early if he knew that garnet was going to be hurt he wouldnt have traded billups we would have beat the lakers for another championship now look what we got ourselves into the only team we helped was denver which is my second team now affalo over there we should have drafted carmelo and they have bbbb billups all they need now is tay and rip wtf i thought it was supose to be about detroit it might be another 15 years b4 we see a championship ben and kwame gone next year then what? we are skrewed unles joe has something big up his sleeve
