Net Reaction to the Wilcox signing

Posted by pistonsnation

Theoretically the Pistons are done adding pieces to the 2009-10 roster.  There could always be another trade, but we’re probably looking at the squad coach John Kuester is going to attempt to lead back into Eastern Conference contention.

Getting Chris Wilcox adds a much needed additional big body to the rotation.  Let’s take a look around the ‘Net and see what kind of reaction the Pistons’ 3rd free agent signing  is getting with some of the early returns:

  • Kevin Sawyer of DBB gives us 5 good reasons that Chris Wilcox has seemed like a Pistons anyway.  I think a lot of us are pulling for Kevin’s reason #4:

His career trajectory fits the prototype of the vagabond who arrives in Detroit and delivers. At his best, he’s a difference-maker, and he hasn’t yet had the chance to ply his wares for a contender.

  • Tom Ziller of FanHouse sees the move as a Dumars head scratcher seeing how Ziller views Wilcox as a downgrade from Amir Johnson:

But the problem is that Detroit just forfeited Amir Johnson to Milwaukee, despite the fact that Johnson 1) is five years younger than Wilcox, 2) will earn roughly the same salary as Wilcox this season, and 3) has a contract which will expire next summer, in the vaunted summer of 2010. Amir is better than Wilcox today, but Detroit had to get from under Johnson’s contract to have the room to sign Villanueva and Ben Gordon. It’s a backwards situation which hurts the Pistons next year, and probably in 2010-11.

  • Like me and many others in Pistons Nation, Bob Biscigliano of Detroit4Lyfe is happy that this signing means we’re out of the Big Baby chase.  Bob’s also likening this signing to the  acquisition of  an untapped hoops resource known as Ben Wallace back in 2000.
  • Vince Ellis of the Free Press sees Wilcox as the best of the bargain bigs available and sees him possibly competing against Kwame Brown for the starting center job.  Even if he doesn’t start I see Wilcox seeing a lot of time at center.  I like that he and Kwame are bost physical post presences.

It’s worth mentioning that the Pistons could still pick up Ben Wallace for the vet’s minimum, which is not affected by the Wilcox signing.  I’m co-signing toasterhands over at LoD.  Ben Wallace had his time here in Detroit, but that time is past.  Besides the fact that he’s a shell of his former self he doesn’t make sense on this roster when we’re trying to build for the future.

I have been telling my grandfather for the last 3 years that Chris Wilcox is a very good player and that I wouldn’t mind seeing him on the Pistons. I think this is an excellent addition. I liken this pick up to the way we picked up Rip, Chauncey and Big Ben. All were decent players who needed a solid home to showcase their skills. Believe me, this guy will not disappoint. To those that hadn’t seen him play, you’re in for a treat!

if we dont get bosh or boozer we will not make it out of second round . we really need one of them pull it off dumars

Do you think that the aim for this year is to get out of the second round? We all know that’s not going to happen. Now, the Pistons have a young nucleus with Stuck, BG, and CV and other quality players will come in time as they players progress. Rip and Tay are going to stay this year, their leadership will be needed….Plus I think that the Pistons are either going to enter the season with this exact same team or sign one more big man. Probably Big Ben or Nesto.
