That’s not it
Posted by pistonsnationAfter the Pistons most recent face plant Coach Curry is talking up change of attitude:
“The most disturbing thing is we’re 0-5 on Sundays and how we allow things to bother us at times,” Curry said. “During this next 20 games, we’re looking to leave the refs alone more, not let good or bad runs affect us and continue to improve and adapt to the changes.” – Detroit Free Press
Rip and Sheed have always been our technical twins. They’ve always been in the ears of the refs. We didn’t lose to sub .500 teams in back-to-back-to-back fashion because of technical fouls.
There’s three main reasons this team is struggling the way I see it.
1. The trade: The orchestra has lost it’s maestro. Allen isn’t and never will be a point guard. Start him at the one if you like, but that doesn’t mean he’s capable of running the show. That’s not his game. Moving Stuckey to the front line was a good move if you’re not just sliding Rip and Iverson over.
Chauncey and Rip worked because they weren’t getting in each other’s way. Chauncey would lace the track and Rip locked the flow. That’s not the case with Rip and AI. Take you pick Curry, they don’t work as a tandem.
2. Rotations: This one is all on Curry. This team doesn’t have to play small ball, he chooses to with those ineffective three guard line ups. He’s being out coached on a consistent basis because he’s trying to coach down to the opponent. If you’re having to adjust your lineup and rotations game by game your just admitting that you don’t have an established game plan. I can see doing some in game tweaks but Curry is just trying to over think the games. Kwame Brown, Jason Maxiell, and Amir Johnson not even coming off the bench against Washington was down right stupid. The Wizards are the worst team in the East and you’re not going to play guys who were supposed to be part of the regular attack because they are down a few big bodies?
He’s letting his point system override his better judgement. Flip Saunders rode the starters, but he knew how to win basketball games. I don’t think Curry does.
3. Defense: Wasn’t that the theme of training camp? Didn’t Rodney Stuckey say we’re going to play Bad Boys defense? I thought they were going to establish themselves down low and pick up ball handlers full court? Where is it? Opponents scoring and field goal percentage are both up. Didn’t Michael Curry earn his NBA pay check by playing defence?
The post-trade gelling is taking longer than expected. But, in the mean time Curry and the Pistons need to work on defense and getting a regular rotation going.

Maybe you can answer this for me but I doubt it. How the f**k does Curry a new rookie coach plan on making this team forget about the refs!?! The past three coaches have been trying to make this team forget about the f**king refs and just play and night in and night out we still have to stand there and argue the little calls when they get a steal on us and run the fast break on us! Get your a$$ back on D! That’s what this team is known for our DEFENSE, what has happened. Now I’m not innocent at all either I’ve sat here and complained about AI and every other thing that this team has done wrong over these first 20 games. But seriously 16 games is more then enough for this team to get use to a future HOF. I’m sick of watching Sheed miss so many reads while he’s on D, It’s sickening that 43% of his shots are from beyond the arc, wasn’t it said at the beginning of the season that this was gonna be the year that SHEED returned to the post his bread and butter, he came into camp in shape he was ready to go to work, I don’t care if he’s scoring if you’re not scoring from the paint then you’re making this team weak in the fact that we have nobody to go to down low. And Curry what happened to I’m gonna develop the young guys, 0 minutes for Max, Amir & Kwame combined!?! Kwame sure I can understand but your two biggest energy players get no run and then you sit there and tell the press that we couldn’t bring any energy tonight. No S*!T you didn’t bring energy you didn’t even look at your energy players on the bench. I’m just waiting for the day that he realizes that his stupid small ball lineup isn’t gonna work, that you can’t play a 6-7 200 pound guy at the 3. Damn it Curry realize that AI or RIP HAS TO GO TO THE BENCH!! Admit that you’ve made a ton of mistakes that you’ve been lost half the time you’ve been out there coaching, alot of people are gonna respect you more for realizing your mistakes and owning up to them instead of trying to find a new way to play it off. How you gonna explain it to people that you’ve realized it’s time for one of them to go to the bench when STUCK & RIP outplay AI in the next 5 or 6 games, how you gonna explain to people that it’s taken you 20 some odd games to realize something people have been saying everyday that those 2 can’t play on the court at the same time. Look Curry all we Pistons fans ask of you is to realize that you’ve made a bunch of mistakes and to get the balls to tell AI that’s he’s not gonna start he’s a rented player he’s a one and done, think about the FUTURE OF THE TEAM!
December 11th, 2008 at 3:46 pmLET’S GET TO WORK PISTONS!!
DEEEEEEEEETROIT BASKEEEEEETBALLL!
I think a lot of fan are starting to reach that level of frustration.
I know and I mean I think at the same time it’s killing all of us inside to be saying this kinda stuff about our team. I know it is me, I mean it’s killing to see this team go out there night in and night out and give it their all and see them come up short every time. It’s gotten to the point that I can’t even read recaps on espn after a lose because it’s always the same thing. I just want this team, my team to figure it out sooner rather then later. It also kills me to go on message boards and listen to people that I know are die hards chew this team out like this.
December 11th, 2008 at 4:35 pmI think what really set it off was these last three games all winnable games to see us lose so badly and knowing that the score is lieing that it wasn’t that close. It’s sad because I figured this team could go 7-0 running up to the Utah game and that would be a real test for us this month, I know that all this team needs is to string off 3 or 4 wins in a row and it doesn’t matter who it’s against. I’m gonna hold off judging until All Star Break though.
LET’S GO PISTONS!!!!
Excellent post, man. You make all very good points and they aren’t really arguable. I’d like to know why the f Walter Hermann doesn’t get more minutes! Curry needs to be fired if he doesn’t start giving him more minutes dammit. I’ve seen several box scores where Walter only plays around 5 minutes. That’s complete bologna. Rip needs to go get counseling since he feels lost since Chauncey left. I know AI is a different player but AI is playing hard and has the hunger, it’s not his fault. No fingers should be pointed at him. I’m getting tired of losing to crap teams. I’m sick of pointing all the fingers at the coach. We tried that with Saunders. Let’s be honest, some of our starters lacked the sense or urgency or “hunger” in the playoffs this year. McDyess seemed to be the only one that really wanted to win. I think it’s ridiculous that a coach has to motivate his players to want to play. As much as I like Chauncey, he had the attitude of everything will be okay when we were down in last year’s playoffs. I think Joe D. needs to do something drastic. Gotta get these guys to play hard. Us not being competitive will make Boston’s path to the finals and chance for a repeat that much easier. I can envision Sheed and Rip getting traded before all-star break if they don’t keeping their composure and play hard. Play hard against crap teams, we shouldn’t only play hard against great teams like the Lakers, Spurs, etc. The crap teams are crap, they are and should be winnable games. C’mon.
December 11th, 2008 at 10:38 pmWhen things are going our way, we seem to lose our focus and composure. Where’s the mental toughness this team once had? We are becoming the softie Dallas Mavericks as of late.
December 11th, 2008 at 10:40 pmI am concerned that MC has already lost this Pistons team, just like Flip did, although it took Flip a year and a half to do so.
MC needs to get back to his promises at the beginning of the year:
Focus on Defense.
Play the young talent – Maxiel and Amir recording a DNP – CD is pathetic coaching.
And finally, clearly establish who is playing what role out there. Is it AI’s show to run? That’s MC’s call. Is our offense going to stay the same and run through Rip? That’s MC’s call.
Either way, the call needs to be made. We can’t keep squandering games in uncertainty.
And for the love of God, let’s abandon the small ball starting 5. It may work in spurts in the right situations, but it will fail if it’s the staple of our offensive attack.
December 12th, 2008 at 10:42 amThe way I see it, Curry is the problem. He doesn’t recognize momentum shifts. How can such a talented team always seem to blow leads? Squeeze out wins? Curry lacks the talent to run the show. Dumars error #2, 1 being Darko, 2 being Curry.
Just my opinion.
