Three cheers for Will Bynum

Posted by pistonsnation

Hey, did you hear?  Allen Iverson is a Piston!  Yeah, he’ll make his debut on Friday in New Jersey.  Good news, right?  It’s real good news, except that is if you’re Will Bynum.  Will’s a team guy, but like any competitor you know he’d love to be able to help the team on the court.

“I’m just going to be ready,” Bynum said. “Whenever my name is called, I’ll be ready.” -mlive

With Chauncey traded and Iverson not able to play until all trade perameters are met Will moved up in the rotation the last two games and really showed what he can do when called upon.  Now, he’ll have to slide back down the gaurd rotation to make room for Iverson and his minutes.

In Will’s case the Billups/Iverson trade has already payed off.  Will got a chance to show the Pistons brass that they made good choice in signing him.  He came off the bench and really gave the Pistons a lift in both games, especially in Charlotte when he scored 10 points in the fourth to help secure the win.  For the two games Will averaged 8.5 points and 3 dimes.  He’s not just a summer league baller.

As a fan of the game how can you not love Will’s game?  Listed at a very generous 6′ Will is fearless.  He uses to his quickness to blow by his defender and then attacks the rim like he’s 6′6″.  And, it’s not just that he goes hard to the bucket either, he’s a very crafty and athletic finisher hitting on 62% of his shots in the two games.   Will also understands how to set up teammates and is very adept at pick-and-roll offense.  That’s on top of the ball hawking defense which he’s noted for.  You can tell the time Will spent overseas gave him a good understanding of the point guard position.

I think the Pistons are lucky to have such depth at the all important point guard position.  Hopefully Will showed enough to for M.C. to find minutes for Will to really keep the opposition guessing.

[...] Will Bynum, who’s gone from a rarely-used third-stringer to a surprisingly effective backup. PistonsNation agrees: As a fan of the game how can you not love Will’s game? Listed at a very generous 6? Will is [...]

I’m extremely happy for Will. I was in his class at Georgia Tech, and he was the sparkplug that took us to the Final Four. He works incredibly hard and has been great in the D-League. Pistons management made the right choice in signing Will.

  3. DC Hawk Says:

Oh, and he’s not even close to 6′…more like 5′9″

  4. pistonsnation Says:

Like he said in our interview though he plays above 6′.

    Thanks DC Hawk!

I’m an Iverson fan arriving via League Pass in the trade, and I’ll say that Bynum’s 4th quarter in the Charlotte game was absolutely nuts.

Good to know that Iverson can miss a few games with ankle tweaks and still have some performance off the pine.

Will is solid, smart, savy and plays his role. A true piston at heart. He will be called upon this season and into the playoffs. We have proven to rely on that extra ‘X’ factor to get us over the hump, everybody needs guys like Will ‘I’ Am! Go get’em Will.

  7. Chris Says:

Seriously. As a Raptors fan, I had to watch him torch us yesterday. If he can’t find minutes in Detroit, we’ll take him! Dying for a backup PG over here.

  8. Jay Terillo Says:

I am from Chicago and Will is the man here. If you are just “getting up” on Will..You haven’t seen anything yet.

  9. LaVell Says:

I played against Will in a summer league. We is a very smart; strong combo guard for his size. he is the “Real Deal”.

As a Chicago long time basketball fan,, summer leagues, highschool college from Rod Stricland, Mark Aguire, KG, and on up to D. Rose,,,, Will Bynum is the real deal Detroit,,, we in Chicago know that the dude is unstoppable,, flame on,,,, but he can’t do what he is capable of in a structure that is geared to organization and control, rather than creativity and talent and athleticism because the others on his team are not on the same level,, Put it this way,,, I would carefully have to deliberate between Will the Thrill and D Rose, because,,, Will may be better,

Nice to see Will getting so much love!

I remember dude on “Preps”–anyone else remember that show? It was eight years ago, he cameo’d a few times, and his athleticism was nuts. Sometimes people make the mistake of thinking short guys aren’t athletic–they’re just plucky, or tough, or hard-working. Bynum is a great example of a short guy who is insanely talented, athletically speaking. His hops are better than almost anyone in the league, he has great body control, and he loves the moment. Clutch. His game doesn’t fit pro ball, really, but I’m hoping for the best.
